Ah, winter: friend or foe? We love snuggling up in our cosy knitted hats and scarfs, and trying out cute new hairstyles to complement our rugged-up appearance. We don’t love the impact that winter can have on our hair, though – with the inevitable combination of cold weather, central heating, rain and woolly hats making it dull, dry, static and frizzy. Here, we want to show you some simple tricks that will keep your hair lustrous throughout the long winter months, and that will help you achieve a flawless and effortless winter-chic look.

Lock the moisture in

It’s always important to condition your hair regularly, but in winter this is absolutely essential. As the chilly air seeps in, we turn on the central heating to keep warm. This sucks the moisture out of our hair, which can leave us with brittle locks and a flaky scalp. Now, don’t be tempted to wash your hair any more than usual (as this can get rid of natural oils). Instead, try using leave-in conditioner such as Redken one united spray or a hydrating, moisturising hair mask like all soft Redken. Comb the product through while your hair is wet, and it will look beautifully shiny once it has been blow-dried.

Keep on top of split ends

It is quite natural (although annoying) to get split ends during the winter, as we all know that cold conditions dry out hair. While split ends can be avoided by conditioning regularly, you should sort them out before winter fully kicks in. November is a good month to get a trim, as this will ensure that your ends are in the best possible condition before frosty mornings set in. Then, you can easily tackle any rogue split ends as they show up by using Redken’s anti-snap leave in conditioner to strengthen the hair and avoid any split ends reoccurring.

Protect against frizz

There are some classic frizz-inducing culprits that we can’t exactly live without in winter – central heating being one, and woolly clothes being another. There are some that we can cut out, though, and doing so makes a big difference to the overall condition of your hair. Try to avoid using hair dryers, straighteners or curling tongs too often, for example. Also, steer clear of products containing sulphates, silicone or alcohol, as these encourage static in your hair. Oil-based products, on the other hand, are good at fighting frizz such as frizz dismiss which smooths and re-hydrated frizzy and thick hair.

Pump up the volume

If you’ve styled your hair in the morning, the last thing you want is for it to have fallen flat by lunchtime. This puts us in a bit of a pickle, as wearing a hat can give us the dreaded ‘hat hair’, while leaving it exposed to the cold can cause damage. Using Repower Kerasilk shampoo for volume (and applying Repower foam conditioner at the ends) every couple of days is a good way to add bounce to your hair, and using a Repower plumping cream will hold your style in place.
