Ladies with curly hair: how many times has a straight-haired friend turned to you and said, ‘I wish I had curly hair – you’re so lucky’? And how many times have you replied, ‘Believe me, you don’t’. A lot, right? While curly hair looks beautiful, we know that it does come with its problems – not least the curse of fluffy hair! From frizz to flyaways, fluffy hair causes havoc for many of us (including people with straight hair on occasion). So, if you suffer from hair that you sometimes worry could give people a static shock, here are a few tips to tame it.

Keep the moisture in

Fluffy hair is usually the result of dryness, so it’s really important to make sure you condition when you wash. You could even use a deep conditioning mask once per week if you need extra moisture. Also, if you wash your hair with shampoo every day, this may be causing it to lose essential natural oils, so you could consider alternating between a regular shampoo wash and a conditioner-only wash every two days (or however frequently you wash your hair). This will enable you to clean your hair without getting rid of its key moisturising oils.

Put just-dried wavy hair in a bun

If you have wavy hair, then you can stop it from going fluffy by putting it in a loose bun after washing and drying it. This will help to keep the waves in place and stop flyaways forming. You can also achieve a similar effect by using curling tongs to define the waves after drying (being sure to use a dry oil and heat protection spray before applying any heat to your hair).

Don’t brush curls

Brushing out curls is a sure-fire way to make your hair go frizzy. Whether your hair is naturally curly or you’ve used the tongs to create curls or waves, avoid going near it with a brush at all costs. If you need to detangle curls, use a wide-toothed comb or your fingers.

Caught in the rain? Don’t panic!

For people with fluffy hair, rain is an enemy. The moisture can cause beautifully styled hair to frizz out of control in minutes. But you can protect yourself against the risk of this by carrying a hair serum and a hairband in your bag. Simply apply the serum to the hair and wind it round into a bun until it dries. This should help to smooth any flyaways back down.
